coffee & life

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guest coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and return with a large pot of coffee an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some coffee in hand, the professor said: “If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problem and stress.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups. Now if life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tolls to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it. “So, don’t let the cups drive you… enjoy the coffee instead”

P/s: Thanks to Amir for the email.

  6. Prof's right. Have a real life, don't pretend to have a life.

PS: Hi Faisal, my first time here. Will visit often and add you to my read-list. :D

    A nice reminder, Faisal.

Everyday we take cups of drinks..to start and to end the day regardless of what's inside that cup. Every sips taken reminds us of what we have in life so that we will appreciate it more and count our blessings. The taste of every drinks is obviously not the same coz it depends on how we take it, how we feel it, how we have it and of course how we go along with it.

I agree that cups are just cups, but at the same time, that cups determine how we want the drinks to be taken with - large? medium? small?

Ahhh.. lemme have a spoonful of peanut butter with plain hot Milo. *work under construction*

  12. Teja - "What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups"

First kenapa kita minum kopi? Sebab kita nak minum kopi kan? Then kenapa pula kita nak pilih cawan sedangkan tujuan utama kita adalah minum kopi?

Ad - Kalau kita asyik pilih cup, nampak gaya 1 rumah penuh cup pun kita masih beli cup sebab kita bandingkan dari satu cup dengan cup yang lain. Last, rasa kopi pun dah lupa bagaimana :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Shumierain - Ramai lupa apa tujuan kita minum kopi pada asalnya selepas kita melihat cawan kopi tersebut :)

Wahidah - Kopi dalam konteks ni, digunakan untuk tersirat :)

  14. Yup. We have always been attracted to something not important more than others. It's because we just use our sight sense to look at something. Actually, trust me, you can use your whole body to look at something. To feel it. We will discover a lot of the answers. The important thing is, look at something with your brain. =)

  15. JL - Thanks for visiting me. You're right about the prof. He was right about the coffee and life. I totally agree :)

Zara - LOL. Last time it was about apple and now about drink. Well, he said let's take coffee as life which he didn't say drink as life. So, it's about coffee and the fancy cup.

About the size of the cup, if you read carefully he said:

"...return with a large pot of coffee an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive..."

He brought "large pot of coffee" and he didn't mention about the size of the cup for comparison purpose :)

So, it means even though you got small cup you can always pour more from the pot :) Don't you agree?

People are tend to focus on "cup" rather than the taste of the "coffee". Then they'll go... whining about unfair life ;)

"Coffee" is about choices. Some people like it black and some prefer with milk :)

  16. Arabella - Tak lupa :) Kalau terlupa tolong ingatkan ye hehe.

Foong - Yes Foong. I hope the professor was not YOU! LOL.

  17. Tammy - That's true :) So you don't mind I serve your coffee with the whisky single shot glass? LOL.

Cahaya - Then you have missed the point of drinking coffee :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Skull - That's sharp man! :) Well to choose fancy and expensive cups for your coffee is not wrong, but don't forget to enjoy the taste of the coffee instead of getting a fancy cup and comparing it with others 24/7.

P/s: I need coffee and sugar every time I'm overloaded with boss's craps.

  19. kita minum coffee sbb kita nk mnum..tapi..kena pilih cawan gak..kalau cawan tu retak?how?

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Teja - Kalau cawan tu retak, kenalah tampal. Kalauu tak tampal, kopi akan tumpah dan akhirnya kering as time goes by.

    ReplyDelete
  21. ahahaa..selalunya..cawan retak org xpakai da.. ;p

    ganti dgn yg baru..

    ReplyDelete
  22. Teja - Ya, cawan tetap cawan walaupun baru. Tapi apa gunanya cawan tanpa kopi? Jika tiada cawan, rasanya boleh tak minum dari teko?

    ReplyDelete
  23. baiklah...ku xmampu berlawan kata2 denganmu..ahaha..

    ps; p.ramlee mnum 'kopi segera'..letak serbuk kopi dlm mulut,letak air..'bancuh' n minum.. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  24. owh ya..xperlukan teko n cawan.. :D

  25. But I always want the best coffee in town, still. Regardless the brands, packaging and all.

Now, I'm so fickle. And choosy.

We might think the most important part will be the coffee itself. For me, everything will give you different experience whenever you take a sip. The feelings, satisfaction, all-in-one, can't be describe! It won't gave you as much as satisfaction when you drink from the normal cup/plain cup or even a nice, colorful mugs. It just how you get the satisfaction from. Either from the drink or with the whole package - drink and packaging.

p/s: I wonder... what people really feels when they sip coffee from Starbucks, and kedai mamak.

It's true. A noodle seller here can make a lot more than a teacher - both earning a living (coffee) but in different situations (cups), one much harder (and may be less inspiring) than the other.

  28. Anonymous9:09 AM

Good one. :) But as always in life we tend to go for the cup than the coffee, especially when we start feeling comfortable a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. tp semua org ada diff view psl hidup kan??? ada org mementingkan coffee..but most of us lebih mementingkan the cup, instead of the coffee..
i prefers coffee, cup tu boleh tukar-tukar, xrealistic..huhuhh..

  32. nice i like this post so much!

  33. errr... but without those beautiful cups, your coffee is just spillage on the floor, let alone enjoying it =.= wake up dude, cups are more important as you can use 'em for other drinks! Life is not only about coffee..

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey dear ! Sorry for the long lost hehe
Anyway I already read this in malay version , nto sure but might be in book.
But yea I totally agree about the cups! Hehe

  35. hi, first time dropping by and I must say I like the way you write =D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Teja - Haha sebab P.Ramlee ikut teori bila sampai ke perut akan diproses juga :)

Teja - Tapi cara yang P.Ramlee pakai tak relevant :P

    ReplyDelete
  37. Cahaya - Yes, you mentioned about kedai mamak and Starbucks right? Well, the different is the coffee I'd say. Starbucks has no fancy cup rather than white mug with its logo and for icy drinks, worse. Then, why most of us prefer the coffee in Starbucks? :)

    Wahidah
    - Jom kaji sejarah :P

  38. STP - After all, the taste of the coffee count :) You won't go to somewhere serve good cup but bad coffee don't you?

    Jard - Yeah! :D

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ismail - Exactly. We tend to focus on cup than coffee and what make the matter worse is we compare our cup with others! Back to the basic, coffee is the main thing here :)

Masni - Ya.

  40. Axim - Glad that you like it! :)

  41. Joseph - Back to the topic:

"Now if life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups."

    Remember?

I hope you can read again the post. Remember most "people" focus too much on cup than coffee and do you think "they" are happy? :)

    I was.

But now, I enjoy the taste of the coffee which make me smile everyday :)

Ann - So, do you still focusing on the cup more than coffee? :) Have a nice day dear!

typically, we want the best in whatever thing we can our hands on :P (thus the overloaded stress yg dok bertambah je!)

    yes we want coffee
but the kepuasan is from the cawan :P tak ke?

don't you think it's so dull to be "normal" is a sense just pasrah and go for the "jalan slamat"? ie tak amik risk, just hidup biasa2 je~

    ReplyDelete
  50. Joseph - So, you are saying that coffee at Mamak's stall is better than Starbucks because they have better cup than Starbucks? Good luck then :)

Adila - Beautiful cup is just a bonus. But the main reason you drink coffee because of its taste. No? :) I don't say that cup is not important at all but always remember what is the main reason you drink coffee :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Faisal, try drink Starbucks coffee with mamak stall's half-cleaned plastic cup.. @-@ the feeling and the touch is different, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Joseph - That is what happening to you :) You focusing on the cup until you don't even know what your drink is :)

P/s: I drink coffee and enjoying my cup at the same time. I enjoy the fancy cup yet I never forget what is coffee about ;)
